Korea's traditional attire... From where does the beauty of hanbok come from? 자연의 빛을 담은, 부드러운 곡선의 어울림. 한국의 전통의상, 한복의 아름다움은 어디에서 오는 것일까요?[자막] Hanbok, the Art of Line & Color 선과 색의 예술, 한복[내레이션] During the era of the Joseon dynasty, hanbok was everyday wear. But from a certain point, it became a garment only worn on special occasions. However these days, more of Korea's youth have begun to sport hanbok, mesmerized by its beauty. Foreigners in hanbok are also not hard to come by. 조선시대 일상복이었던 한복은, 언젠가부터, 특별한 날에만 입는 옷이 되었습니다. 그런데, 최근 젊은이들이 한복의 아름다움에 반해서, 즐겨 입기 시작했는데요. 외국인도 눈에 띕니다. [인터뷰] 크리스티나/미국여성 입고 춤추기도 좋네요. 움직이기가 편해요. 모두 다 특별해요. 제가 입어 본 옷들과 전혀 달라요. [인터뷰] 지노 /페루 좋아요. 신나고요. 옛날 왕이나 사람들이 입었던 전통 의상을 입어볼 수 있어서 색다른 것 같아요. [내레이션] Then what is the beauty of hanbok? Let's delve deeper into this subject: the beauty of hanbok. 과연 한복의 매력은 무엇일지 지금부터 한복의 아름다움에 대해, 찬찬히 얘기 해 볼까요? [내레이션] Hanbok represents the thoughts, customs and spirit unique to Koreans. 한국인만의 사상과 관습, 정신이 깃든 한복. [내레이션] Hanbok basically consists of a top and bottom. It's different from Japan's Kimono or China's Qipao. Those two countries' traditional attire are formed as a one-piece with the top and bottom connected. Hanbok also has slightly different types according to the season and the wearer's gender and age. 한복은 상의와 하의가 나눠진 투피스가 기본구조로, 일본의 기모노와 중국의 치파오. 두 나라의 전통의상이 상하의가 붙은 원피스 형태인 것과는 다르죠. 또한 한복은 성별과 나이, 계절에 따라서 종류가 조금씩 다릅니다.[내레이션] For men, the jeogori or jacket and a pair of pants are the basic look. On top of that... a vest or overcoat, which is called durumagi, could be layered over. 남성는, 저고리와 바지를 기본으로 겉옷인 두루마기나 조끼를 겹쳐 입었고,[내레이션] For women, a shorter jacket called jeogori and a skirt called chima were worn below a durumagi or baeja which is a sleeveless vest. Also worn over the jeogori and chima was the magoja, which is an outer jacket. 여성는 짧은 상의인 저고리와 치마. 그 위에, 배자 마고자 두루마기 등을 입었습니다.[내레이션] A ceremonial wardrobe would include the addition of a fancy outer garment over the everyday wear. This particular look is for one's wedding day. The men's wedding garment was originally a uniform for those in public office. But with marriage being the highlight of one's life, the garment was allowed for everyone to wear on one's wedding regardless of social status. 특별한 날에 입는 예복은 일상복 위에, 화려한 겉옷을 덧입는 구조인데요. 이 옷은 결혼할 때 입는 혼례복입니다. 남성의 혼례복은, 원래 관직에 있는 사람만 입는 관복이었습니다.[내레이션] The women's wedding gown was also an outfit originally worn by princesses of the Joseon royal court. 여성의 혼례복도 역시, 조선시대 왕실에서 공주나 옹주가 입던 옷이었습니다.[내레이션] Children's hanbok is much more colorful than the adults'. In regular times, children wore the basic jacket and skirt like grownups. On holidays or birthdays, they jazzed it up with an extra special hanbok jacket with sleeves of multicolored stripes. 어린 아이들의 한복은, 색이 어른의 옷보다 화려합니다. 평소에는 어른과 같이 저고리와 치마를, 돌이나, 명절에는 색동으로 소매를 만든 색동저고리를 입었습니다.[내레이션] Of the numerous kinds of hanbok for men and women and for each season and different social class, women's hanbok is by far what people associate the most when they think of the beauty of hanbok. Then let's try to discover the source of hanbok's unique beauty from its female look in particular. 남녀노소, 계절, 신분 등에 따라 다른, 수많은 다양한 한복 중에서 한복의 미를 얘기 할 때 가장 먼저 떠올리는 건 역시 여성의 한복이 아닐까 싶은데요. 그럼, 여성의 한복에서, 한복만이 가진 아름다움의 근원을 찾아볼까요?[내레이션] Hanbok is believed to have been worn from the 3rd or 4th century BC. 한복은 기원전 3,4세기부터 입기 시작했다고 전해집니다.[내레이션] But it was from the Joseon period when hanbok began to increase in its variety, form and color. 한복의 종류나 형태가 다양해지고, 색도 화려해 진 건, 조선시대에 들어서면서 부터입니다.[내레이션] When hanbok was first introduced, there was no clear difference between men and women. Women, like men, also wore pants instead of a skirt. 처음 한복을 입었을 땐 남녀 차이가 분명하지 않았습니다. 여성은 남성처럼, 치마 대신 바지를 입었죠.[내레이션] But in the Unified Silla era, the skirt and jacket became the exclusive wear for women and they further evolved in shape going into the Joseon era. 통일신라시대 치마와 저고리는 여성의 고유 복식형태가 되고, 조선시대 들어 조금씩 모양이 변합니다. [내레이션] The jacket grew shorter and tighter 저고리는 점차 짧아지면서, 좀 더 몸에 달라붙게 입었고.[내레이션] The skirt came to accentuate a slim waistline, rounder hips and the silhouette of the female body. It was a result of female aspirations to look more beautiful by adding individual character to the simple structure of hanbok. 치마는 잘록한 허리와 풍성한 엉덩이를 강조하다가, 몸의 선을 살리는 형태를 입게 됐는데요. 단순한 구조에, 자신만의 개성을 더해 아름답게 보이려는 여성들의 노력이었습니다.[인터뷰] 교수 끝이 올라간 선이 19세기 가면서 정착이 됩니다. 소매도 마찬가지입니다. 소매도 19세기 20세기 가면서 더욱 뚜렷하게 나타나고 이거는 아마 조선조 말부터 근대로오면서 한복의 아름다움을 곡선의 아름다움으로 가치를 두는...현상에서 비롯되는 게 아닌가[내레이션] Actress Lee Yeong-ae 한복을 입은 탤런트 이영애와,[내레이션] And singer Suzy are stunning in these hanbok photos. The images truly speak to the beauty of hanbok. 가수 수지. 한복이 아름답다는 건, 바로 이 순간을 두고 하는 말이 아닐까요?[내레이션] Photographer An Ju-yeong who captured the two women in his viewfinder 두 여인을 뷰 파인더 안에 담은,[내레이션] gave the most attention to the lines of the hanbok dress. 사진작가 안주영씨. 그가 가장 신경 쓴 건 한복의 선이었습니다.[인터뷰] 안주영 사진작가 한복은 사람의 몸을 휘감아주는 형식이죠. 시작점 자체가 달라요. 어떤 사람이 어떻게 입느냐에 따라 다르고 움직임에 따라서 그 옷의 디자인이 변형되고. 한복의 아름다움은 움직이면서 생기는 선들이나 아니면 바람에 날리거나..[내레이션] In hanbok, the straight and curvy lines come together in harmony. If we take a look at how it's made, 한복은 직선과 곡선이 서로 어울려 조화를 이룬 옷입니다. 만드는 과정을 살펴보면, [내레이션] the designs are first laid out on flat ground and the shapes are cut out. 우선 바닥에 놓고, 모양을 재단하는 평면재단입니다.[내레이션] Since most lines are for the most part straight, there's nearly no leftover room in the blueprint. This reflects the wisdom of Korean ancestors who used cloth as sparingly as possible. 선의 대부분이 직선이다 보니, 빈틈이 거의 없습니다. 옷감을 최대한 아끼려는 지혜가 들어있는데요.[내레이션] The making of the jacket or jeogori was like putting a puzzle together. Each piece was attached one after another. 저고리는 퍼즐 맞추듯, 조각을 하나하나 붙여가며 만들어 갑니다.[내레이션] The sewing method also slightly differed depending on the location. 위치에 따라 바느질 방법도 조금씩 다른데요. [내레이션] Hanbok is double layered. There is the lining and the exterior fabric. First, the shoulder lines are connected as they serve as the center of the upper body. Then sewing was done in a curvy fashion in consideration of the body type of the wearer. 안감과 겉감 두 겹으로 이뤄진 한복은, 먼저 상체의 중심이 되는 어깨선을 이어줍니다. 그 다음 직선의 옷감을 입는 사람의 체형에 맞게 곡선으로 바느질을 하는데요, [내레이션] Sewing was a key element that determined the overall quality of the finished hanbok. Every stitch had to maintain consistent distance. 바느질은, 한복의 퀄리티를 좌우할 만큼 대단히 중요한 요소입니다. 한 땀 한 땀 일정한 간격을 유지해야 하기 때문이죠. [내레이션] The shoulders, outer collar and sleeves are attached and the side lines connected. 어깨와 섶, 소매를 달고, [내레이션] The remaining components are now the git which is the neckband that goes around the neckline, the goreum or coatstrings used to close the jacket, and dongjeong which is the white collar placed over the end of the git, 옆선까지 이어주면 이제 남은 건, 목선에 해당하는 깃과, 저고리를 여밀 때 사용하는 고름, 그리고 동정.[내레이션] Every stitch required utmost care. 한 땀 한 땀, 마음을 담아 정성을 다합니다. [내레이션] The git of hanbok was like the collar in Western clothes. It gave a better form to the jacket and also protected the person's neck. The shape of the jacket changed considerably over different eras but the collar git was always there. 한복의 깃은, 서양옷의 카라 부분으로, 저고리의 선을 살리고, 목을 보호해 줍니다. 시대에 따라 저고리 모양이 많이 변했지만 깃의 존재만큼은 변함이 없습니다.[인터뷰] 구혜자 / 침선장 (중요무형문화재 제89호) 처음엔 우리 목 주위에 때 묻는 것을 방지하기 위해 시쳐졌을 거예요. 근데 조선 말기로 내려오면서 하나의 장식과 겸해지는 거죠. 이게 마무리에요. 언제나.. 그러니까 언제 어떤 옷이든 마지막에 흰 것으로 동정을 깔끔하게 달아놓으면 시각적으로도 그렇고 옷의 마무리에요.[내레이션] Hanbok was not only beautiful but also practical. All women in those days were in the original sense hanbok fashion designers. 아름다움에 실용성까지 생각하며 정성을 다 한 한복. 그 옛날 모든 여성은 한복의 원조 패션 디자이너였습니다. [인터뷰] 지수현 / 원광디지털대학교 한국복식과학학과 다른 인위적인 것. 단추를 붙이거나 데코레이션을 하는 게 아니에요. 만드는 바느질 손놀림 손을 움직이게 하는 마음이죠. 그 마음의 흐름을 따라 나타나는 선으로 곡선을 표현한 거예요. 자기 성품을 별로 거스르지 않고 자연스러운 맘을 따라갈 수 있게 그걸 표현할 수 있는 굉장히 좋은 방법이었어요. 바느질이라는 게[내레이션] The making of the chima or skirt, which consists of a wide skirt and waist strings, also begins with a flat pattern of straight lines. 치마폭과 허리띠로 구성된 치마 역시, 직선으로 된 평면재단입니다.[내레이션] For the skirt, a square cloth is wrapped around one's waist. 사각의 천을 허리에 둘러 입는 치마. [내레이션] To give more style to this extreme simplicity, pleats were added. Pleats emphasize a slimmer waistline and a pronounced hip line to create a more feminine body line. 이 단순한 스타일에, 치마선을 살리기 위해 생각한 것이 바로 주름입니다. 치마 주름이 잘록한 허리를 강조하고 엉덩이 선을 부풀려서 몸의 선을 더욱 여성스럽게 만들어 주는데요.[내레이션] Finally... a hanbok outfit of a powder pink skirt and green jacket is completed. The two colors that at first didn't seem to match look amazingly well together. This natural harmony is one of the key attributes of hanbok. What does she believe is the beauty of hanbok? 한류에 발맞춰, 한복을 세계에 알리고 있는 이영희 디자이너. 그녀가 생각하는 한복의 아름다움은 뭘까요? [인터뷰] 이영희 한복의 핵심은 선하고 색깔이죠. 다른 양장에선 투피스 같은 색이잖아요. 블라우스 하나 색 틀리고, 근데 우린 그렇지 않아요. 치마, 저고리, 고름도 다른 색 깃도 다른 색이라고. 네 가지 색이 바뀌어도 조화를 이룰 수 있어요. 두 가지 색도 되고 한 가지 색도. 색이 조화기 때문에 우리나라 한복의 특징이 [내레이션] Lee was the first hanbok designer to put the Korean attire on the map in the French fashion industry. She confidently says that tradition plays a big part in any fashion that transcends borders and generations. While focusing on tradition, Lee says the unique colors of hanbok began to catch her attention. 한복디자이너 최초로 한복을 프랑스 패션 중심에 세운 그녀는 자신 있게 말합니다. 국경을 뛰어 넘고 세대를 아우르는 패션의 뿌리는 전통에 있다 그렇게 전통에 집중하다보니, 한복 고유의 색이 눈에 들어왔다고 합니다.[내레이션] The colors serve to further highlight the soft lines of hanbok. Lee insists on using only natural dye for all of her hanbok colors. 색은 한복 고유의 부드러운 선을 더욱 돋보이게 해 주는데요. 자신이 만든 모든 한복의 색은, 천연염색을 고집하고 있습니다.[내레이션] Thus hanbok was born. And its creation owes a great deal to none other than the wind. 그렇게 탄생한 한복이 바로, 바람의 옷입니다. [내레이션] The history of hanbok deeply relates to Korea's natural environment including its four distinct seasons. 우리옷의 화려한 역사는 사계절이 뚜렷한 우리나라의 자연환경과 깊은 관련이 있습니다.[내레이션] There are over 50 dye plants grown in Korea that produce color. 우리나라에서 나오는 색을 내는 염료 식물의 종류는 50여 가지가 넘습니다. [내레이션] This is more than the variety of dye plants across the whole European continent. 유럽대륙 전체에서 나는 것보다 많은 종류죠. [내레이션] This is dried marigold, which blooms from spring to fall. When the flower petals are boiled, they produce a splendid yellow hue. 봄부터 가을까지 피는 금잔화를 말린 건데요 꽃을 끓이면 노란 색이 나옵니다.[내레이션] All of nature including grass, leaves, roots and even stone dust were ingredients for natural dye. To poor commoners, mother nature was a treasure trove accessible to anyone. 이렇듯 풀이나 나뭇잎.. 뿌리는 물론 돌가루까지 모든 자연이 천연염색의 재료가 됐습니다. 가난한 사람들에게 자연은 누구나 쉽게 구할 수 있는 보물창고였습니다.[인터뷰] 염색/홍루까 색감적 차원에서 천연색소 자연 색소는 인간들에게 주는 정서적인 감성이 매우 큽니다. 화학 색소와는 다르게 못 내는 색은 없죠. 단지 색으로서의 의미가 있는 것들이 오래 유지 할 수 있는 것들이 얼마나 되느냐 그걸 따지는 거죠.[내레이션] We are here led by the light of nature. 자연의 빛을 찾아왔습니다.[내레이션] Indigo blue was the most commonly used hanbok color in the Joseon era. 쪽빛은 조선시대, 한복에서 가장 많이 사용한 색입니다. [내레이션] Of all natural dye pigments, it's one of the longer lasting and also has exceptional antibacterial effects. 자연에서 얻은 천연염색 중, 오래도록 색을 유지할 뿐만 아니라, 향균성이 특히 뛰어납니다. [내레이션] Indigo grass is water-soluble, and so when put in water, the color melts. 쪽풀은 수용성이기 때문에, 물에 넣으면 색이 물에 녹는데요. [내레이션] A rock is placed on top to keep the plants submerged in water. It stays this way for two days. 물에 잘 잠기도록 돌을 올려, 이틀 정도 보관합니다.[현장음] 정관채 삼복더위 아주 무더운 여름에 쪽이 잘 자라있거든요. 잎에는 색소를 많이 머금어 있고.[내레이션] In order for the blue color to melt in the water to become a proper dye, this white stone dust powder you see here is essential. 물에 녹은 푸른색이 청색 염료가 되기 위해선 이 하얀 석화가루가 필요합니다.[내레이션] The powder helps oxidation. 석화가루가 산화를 도와주는데요[내레이션] Just a couple of times hand stirring, and already the color has changed. It's most important to use an adequate and accurate amount of the powder. 조물조물 손짓 몇 번에 벌써 색이 변했네요. 석화는 알맞을 양을 정확하게 넣는 게 관건. [내레이션] If there's too little, the color will not come out well. If there's too much, the color quality will suffer. 양이 적으며 색소를 충분히 잡지 못하고, 반대로 많으면 쪽의 품질이 떨어지기 때문입니다. [내레이션] Air is injected into the stone powder-and-water mix for oxidation. This act of whisking, using a rod and giving consistent pressure, is called tempering. 석회가 들어간 물에 공기를 넣어, 산화를 시킵니다. 일정한 힘을 가해 막대로 휘저어주는 걸 담금질이라 하는데,[내레이션] The floral liquid gradually turns from yellowish brown to indigo blue. 노랑 갈색이던 꽃물이 시나브로 쪽빛을 찾아갑니다.[인터뷰] 정관채 이렇게 아주 수천 번의 담금질 속에서 쪽 색이 피어나는 거죠. 소리를 들어보면 탄산음료 사그라지는 소리가 나요. 아주 청량한 소리. 이 소리 속에서 쪽빛이 깨어나는 거죠.[내레이션] Once you obtain the color you want, keep the liquid still for about half a day. This way pigments heavier than water will sink. And that which sinks to the bottom is the very ingredient for the color indigo blue. 원하는 색이 만들어지고 한나절 정도 놓아두면, 물보다 무거운 색소는 가라앉는데요. 이것이 바로 쪽의 원료입니다. [내레이션] This is how dark blue is made from nature. This is how the color comes to life. 자연에서 얻은 색이 비로소 빛을 내는 순간. 쪽이 잠에서 깨어납니다.[내레이션] Indigo blue is the most representative color of hanbok. Of all natural dyes, it's the most complex and time consuming to produce. Maybe this is why this particular blue is all the more valuable and all the more beloved by many people. 한복의 가장 대표적인 색인, 쪽빛은 천연염색 중에서도 작업이 가장 복잡하고 시간도 오래 걸리죠. 그래서 그 빛이 더 귀하고, 모든 이들에게 사랑받는 건지도 모르겠습니다. [인터뷰] 정관채 염색이 처음에 하얀 천을 집어넣으면 이 염료는 연두색으로 보여요 그게 햇빛과 맞닿았을 때 산화가 돼서 쪽빛으로 토해내는... 담그는 횟수에 따라 세 번 정도 염색하면 하늘색, 네다섯 번은 파란색, 아마 10회 이상 20회 가까이했을 때는 그야말로 쪽빛, 감색이라고 하는 까마귀 날개처럼 검정색에 가까운 푸른색. 오로지 쪽에서만 나올 수 있는 것이지요.[내레이션] The dye is made through a long fermentation process. Therefore everything that touches the skin, including the dye and cloth, are all from nature. This one of a kind natural indigo blue made through painstaking efforts is also reflective of Korea's clear autumn sky. 삭히고 삭혀서 물감을 만들었으니 피부에 닿는 것은 색도 천도 모두 자연입니다 정성을 다해 태어난 세상에 하나뿐인 청명한 푸른 빛. 자연의 색, 쪽빛에는 한국의 높고 맑은 가을 하늘이 담겨있습니다.[내레이션] Traditional garments that feel ever so distant often become familiar if they appear in TV dramas or movies. A case in point is the recent hit TV series. 멀게만 느껴지는 전통복식이, 드라마나 영화를 통해 친근하게 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 최근 많은 사랑을 받았던 드라마, <구르미 그린 달빛>처럼 말이죠. [내레이션] Hanbok worn by the male and female leads was praised to having further boosted the drama's appeal. 남녀 주인공이 입은 한복이, 드라마의 매력을 한층 더 살렸다는 평가를 받았는데요[내레이션] Costume director Lee Jin-hee gave the traditional hanbok a makeover for the attire to better suit the genre of a historical fantasy drama. 의상감독 이진희씨는 전통한복을 판타지 장르에 맞게 새롭게 디자인을 했습니다.[인터뷰] 이진희 / ‘구르미 그린 달빛’ 의상 감독 한복이 가진 어떤 선의 단아함, 유니크함은 그대로 가져가고 색에서 현대화 시도를 굉장히 많이 한 작품이에요[내레이션] She says she wanted to demonstrate Oriental beauty through the unique lines and colors of hanbok. 그녀는 한복이 가진 고유한 선과 색으로 동양적인 아름다움을 살리고 싶었다고 합니다. [인터뷰] 한복은 사실 굉장히 본질에 가까운 옷이라고 생각해요. 서양 옷들처럼 레이스나 프릴이나 이런 장식이 달리지 않고 왜곡도 없고 과장성도 없어요. 굉장히 단순하고 본질 형태에 가까운 옷이거든요. 기본적으로 한복의 선은 직선이랑 곡선의 미학적으로 단아한 선을 가지고 있고 모던함과 현대적인 형태미도 굉장히 아름답다고 생각하거든요 그런 것들이 한복이 가진 특징이고 매력이지 않을까 [내레이션] The color of the sky and smooth lines trigger a sense of ease, comfort and freedom both to the body and mind. [내레이션] Graffiti he drew during a 90 day stay in the United States drew particular attention from local Americans. To Americans, to see an African American dressed in hanbok was odd and new. 그가 미국에서 채류한 90일 동안 그린, 그라피티가 현지인들에게 큰 관심을 받았는데요. 현지인들의 눈엔, 흑인이 한복을 입은 게 새롭고 신기 했던 거죠. [인터뷰] 심찬양 제가 가는 곳마다 흑인 친구들이 있었고 그 친구들이 저의 그림을 보러왔으니까 한국 사람으로서 그 사람들에게 한복을 선물해 주고 싶다는 기분으로 한복을 그렸어요. 한국 사람이 한복을 입으면 그냥 그건 한국이거든요. 근데 흑인이 입은 한복은 한국과 다른 나라가 연결되는 거란 생각이 들어요. [내레이션] Sim wanted to promote the fact that hanbok is not reserved only for Koreans but for anyone around the world who wants to wear it. This young man's innocent wish may well be a starting point of globalizing hanbok to the world. 그는 한복이 한국인만 입는 것이 아니라, 전 세계 누구나 다 입을 수 있는 옷이라는 걸 알리고 싶었던 것입니다. 평범한 청년의 순수한 마음처럼, 한복의 세계화는 이렇게 시작되는 게 아닐까요.[내레이션] We asked people who shared a common interest in hanbok.
