Off the southern coast of Korea lies the Jeju Island. The entire island has been designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark due to its rich volcanic landscapes and well-preserved geological resources. Everywhere one looks in Jeju, picturesque scenes unfold like paintings. Thanks to this beauty, many Korean dramas and films have chosen it as their backdrop. Recently, Jeju has been attracting even more visitors because it served as the setting for the globally popular drama “When Life Gives You Tangerines.” Captivated by those scenes on screen, visitors are setting out to explore the beautiful places of Jeju.

Heading east on Jeju Island brings visitors to Seongsan Ilchulbong Sunrise Peak. As they approach, the trapezoidal black volcanic cone rising prominently comes gradually into view. Using this landmark as a guide, travelers inevitably pause at a breathtaking sight that appears along the way: a canola flower field that turns the entire view yellow.
The canola fields near Seongsan Ilchulbong Sunrise Peak are considered a “must-visit spring destination.” The scene creates a perfect picture—porous black stones, the massive Seongsan Ilchulbong Sunrise Peak supporting the sky above, surrounded by expansive yellow canola flowers with the blue sea stretching behind them.

When the wind blows, yellow waves ripple across the landscape. These canola flowers were once a food resource for Jeju residents, who planted them extensively for use as vegetables and oil. Because of this tradition, canola flowers have become the primary symbol that comes to mind when thinking of Jeju. This explains why they frequently appear in the drama “When Life Gives You Tangerines,” which captures the stories of Jeju.
Watching people stroll between the canola flowers recalls the scene where the two main characters in the drama confirm their feelings for each other. It was a dramatic moment where the characters’ sweet emotions blended perfectly with the scenery. Visitors excitedly snap photos, feeling as if they’ve stepped into that scene themselves.

In search of another beautiful location from the drama, travelers move to Gimnyeong-ri, a quiet village in northeastern Jeju. Along the approximately 19.2-kilometer coastal road to Gimnyeong, they take in views of Jeju’s sea. This road, nicknamed the “Sunrise Coastal Road,” is pleasant to drive anytime but would be especially wonderful for encountering the morning sun, as its name suggests.
Arriving at Gimnyeong Beach reveals widely spread fine white sand. Broad, flat rocky shores lie where they meet the seawater. Visitors walk across the moisture-dampened rocks toward the water’s edge, wanting to peer into the clear sea. These rocks are where the character Ae-sun in the drama waited for her mother who had gone diving. It was a heart-wrenching scene depicting the mother’s dive into the sea for livelihood and the child’s disappointment as she constantly waited for her mother’s love.
With each step across these rocks to find the location from the scene, the view of Gimnyeong’s sea becomes imprinted in visitors’ minds. The emerald sea and waves creating white foam seem to cleanse the heart. In the distance, several white wind turbines rotate, generating energy from Jeju’s winds. As the sun begins to set, the sea reflects the changing colors of the sky. In this surreal landscape, visitors feel as if the drama’s protagonist might appear beside them, or as if they themselves have become characters in the drama. These moments, unique to Jeju and impossible to forget, become deeply etched in their hearts.
제주 동쪽에 있는 성산일출봉으로 향한다. 가까워질수록 홀로 우뚝 솟아있는 사다리꼴 모양의 검은 화산 채가 서서히 눈에 들어온다. 그곳을 이정표 삼아 길을 가다 보면 절로 발길을 멈추게 만드는 곳이 나타난다. 시야를 온통 노랗게 물들이는 유채꽃밭이다.
성산일출봉 근방의 유채꽃밭은 ‘봄에 반드시 방문해야 할 곳’으로 손꼽힌다. 구멍이 숭숭 난 검은색 돌, 거대한 성산일출봉과 그것이 받치고 있는 하늘, 그리고 그 주변에 넓게 깔린 노란 유채꽃과 그 뒤로 펼쳐지는 푸른 바다가 한 폭의 그림만 같다.
바람이 불면 노란 물결이 일렁인다. 한때 제주 사람들의 식량 자원이었던 유채꽃이 만든 풍경. 유채꽃을 나물로, 기름으로 먹기 위해 제주 사람들은 유채꽃을 많이 심었다. 그 덕에, 이제 유채꽃은 ‘제주’하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 상징이 되었다. 제주 이야기를 담아낸 ‘폭싹 속았수다’에도 유채꽃이 종종 등장한 이유다.
유채꽃 사이사이를 거니는 사람들을 보고 있자니 드라마의 두 남녀 주인공이 서로의 마음을 확인한 장면이 떠오른다. 두 인물이 느끼는 순간의 달콤한 감정이 배경과 어우러져 극적인 장면이었다. 그 장면 속으로 뛰어든 듯한 기분에 신난 마음으로 카메라 셔터를 연신 눌러본다.
드라마 속 또 다른 아름다운 장면을 찾아 제주 북동쪽의 조용한 마을, 김녕으로 이동한다. 김녕까지 이어진 대략 19.2 km의 해안도로를 따라, 제주 바다의 모습을 눈에 담아둔다. 이 도로의 별명은 ‘해맞이 해안도로’로, 언제 달려도 좋을 길이지만 그 이름대로 도로 위에서 아침 해를 만나게 된다면 더 좋을 것만 같다.
김녕해수욕장에 도착하니 하얗고 고운 모래가 널리 퍼져있다. 넓고 평평한 갯바위가 바닷물과 맞닿는 곳에 누워있다. 맑은 바닷속을 들여다보고 싶어 바닷물에 촉촉이 젖은 바위 위를 걸어, 물가로 이동한다. 이 바위가 드라마 속 애순이가 물질을 하러 들어간 엄마를 기다리던 곳이다. 생계를 위해 바다로 뛰어든 주인공 엄마의 마음, 그에게 사랑받고자 내내 기다리던 어린아이의 섭섭함에 마음이 미어지던 장면이었다.
장면 속 그 장소를 찾아 바위 위를 걸을 때마다, 김녕 바다의 모습이 눈에 각인된다. 에메랄드빛 바다, 하얀 포말을 일으키며 달려오는 파도가 마음을 깨끗하게 씻어내는 듯하다. 저 멀리로는 제주 바람을 이용해 에너지를 만드는 하얀 풍력 발전기 여러 대가 돌고 있다. 해가 저물기 시작하니 시시각각 바뀌는 하늘 색을 바다가 받아낸다. 비현실적인 풍경에 드라마 속 주인공이 옆에 와 있는 것만 같은, 나도 그 드라마 속 인물이 된 것만 같은 기분이 든다. 잊으려야 잊을 수 없는, 오로지 제주에서만 볼 수 있는 그 순간이 마음 깊이 새겨진다.

Intrigued by claims of the world’s largest pure forest, visitors venture from the coast to the island’s interior.

The thousand-year-old Bijarim Forest awaits. This forest is composed of nutmeg yew trees. Upon entering, the moist earthy scent and the fresh aroma released by the trees envelop visitors completely. Even before reaching the main forest path, vast colonies of ferns and trees heavy with fruit create anticipation for what lies deeper within.
The moment visitors step onto the proper forest trail, a sacred atmosphere descends. Approximately 2,800 trees, 600-800 years old, exude a noble presence. The moss wedged between trees and unusual climbing plants create a mysterious ambiance. The reddish soil further enhances the forest’s mystique. This soil, sometimes soft yet occasionally rough to the touch, consists of charcoal powder from stones burned at high temperatures during volcanic eruptions.
Surrounded by the gentle sounds of footsteps, distant birdsong, the trees’ fresh breath and occasional sunlight filtering through leaves, visitors feel as if they’ve stepped away from the everyday world. The mind becomes calm and humble.
Jeju’s human-made spaces are as impressive as its natural wonders. Restaurants serving delicious food line the coast. For those uncertain about what to try, seafood dishes are ideal. For a unique Jeju experience, try cutlass fish dishes. The fish, as long as a human arm, is served grilled whole rather than in pieces. For a variety of flavors, don’t miss cutlass fish braised in spicy and savory seasonings.

While excellent cafés can be found throughout Jeju, Woljeong-ri is known for its concentration of stylish venues. True to its name meaning “where moonlight stays,” this area attracts many visitors due to its beautiful sea views. Consequently, numerous cafés have been established along the coast. Seeking a brief respite, visitors might enter a seafront café to enjoy beverages or desserts made from Jeju specialties while savoring the island’s moments.
Throughout a journey around Jeju, visitors feel as though they’ve watched a beautiful drama. Every step offers a magical scene. It’s easy to understand why this destination has long been beloved by Koreans.

드라마 속 장면을 찾아 나서지 않더라도, 제주도에는 그 자체로 영화에 나올 법한 아름다운 곳이 많다. 바다, 돌, 유채꽃만큼이나 제주의 초록은 대단하다. 세계 최대의 단순림이 있다는 말에 바닷가를 벗어나 제주도 내부로 향한다.
천년의 역사를 지닌 비자림을 찾았다. 비자림은 비자나무라는 나무들이 모인 숲이다. 발을 들이자마자 촉촉한 흙냄새와 나무들이 뿜어내는 싱그러운 향이 온몸을 감싼다. 본격적인 숲길에 들어가기 전부터, 한없이 펼쳐진 고사리 군락지라든지 열매가 주렁주렁 달린 나무들이 안쪽의 모습은 어떨지 기대하게 한다.
본격적으로 숲길에 들어가 발을 들이는 순간 신성한 기운이 덮쳐온다. 총 2,800여 그루의 6-800년 된 나무들이 고고한 기운을 뿜어낸다. 나무들 사이사이에 낀 이끼라든지, 평소라면 흔히 볼 수 없는 종류의 덩굴 식물들도 신비한 분위기를 자아낸다. 붉은색을 띠는 땅도 비자림의 분위기를 한층 신비롭게 만든다. 부드럽다가도 때론 약간의 까끌까끌함이 느껴지는 이 흙은 화산이 폭발할 때 고열로 탄 돌 숯가루란다.
한 걸음을 내디딜 때마다 자박자박 들리는 소리나 멀리서 지저귀는 새의 소리, 나무가 뿜어내는 신선한 숨결, 때때로 나뭇잎 틈새를 비집고 들어오는 햇살에 둘러싸여 있자니 현실 세계에서 한 발짝 벗어난 듯하다. 마음이 차분해지고 겸허해진다.
제주는 자연만큼이나 사람들이 만들어낸 공간들도 대단하다. 제주에는 해안가를 따라 맛 좋은 음식을 내주는 식당들이 가득하다. 무엇을 맛볼지 고민된다면, 해산물을 활용한 음식이 제격이다. 제주도에서만 만나볼 수 있는 담음새까지 경험하고 싶다면 갈치 요리가 좋다. 사람 팔 만큼 긴 갈치를 토막 내지 않고 그대로 구운 채로 올려주기 때문이다. 다양한 맛을 즐기고 싶다면 맵고 짭조름한 양념에 졸여낸 갈치조림도 잊지 말자.
제주 하면 카페도 빼놓을 수 없다. SNS에 인기를 끌 만한 가게들이 무척 많다. 제주 어딜 가든 멋진 카페가 있지만, 감각적인 가게들이 몰려있다는 월정리를 찾았다. 달빛이 머무는 곳이라는 이름의 동네 이름만큼, 바다가 아름다워 사람들이 많이 찾는 곳이다. 그 덕에 수많은 카페가 해안가를 따라 세워졌다. 잠시 휴식이 필요해, 바다에 면한 한 카페의 문을 열었다. 바다를 눈앞에 두고, 제주도 특산물로 만든 음료나 디저트를 즐기며, 제주에서 순간을 천천히 곱씹는다.
제주를 거니는 내내, 한 편의 아름다운 드라마를 본 듯하다. 발길 닿는 순간순간마다 마법 같은 한 장면을 선사한 제주. 오래간 한국인들이 사랑해 온 여행지였다는데 그 이유를 알 것만 같다.
