February 2022
Special Theme
Warehouses

Warehouses are places of storage, often for industrial purposes. Urban residents in particular pass them every day and hardly give them a second thought. Yet in the hands of creative people, old warehouses can become places of beauty, inspiration and renewal. Warehouses that once stored industrial supplies now store dreams and passion.

In this issue of KOREA, we will look at how old warehouses are being put to new uses, from Seoul’s trendy old warehouse district to an abandoned fish market in Jeju where visitors can learn about a unique local tradition. In particular, we will visit Cheongju’s landmark cultural complex, Dongbu Changko, where the local community has transformed a storage facility for tobacco leaves into one the region’s leading arts stages.
