Located near Seodaemun Prison History Hall, Dongnimmun Gate was constructed to commemorate Korea’s long-standing desire for freedom and independence. It was originally built to commemorate the end of the Qing Dynasty’s interference in the Joseon Dynasty’s domestic affairs. During the Japanese colonial period, it became a symbol of the desire for independence. Now that Korea is independent, Dongnimmun Gate symbolizes the Korean people’s determination to preserve the country’s hard-won freedom.
