With the sun scorching down, it’s time to go on a well-deserved holiday break to bring back some energy to the rigors of daily life. We head towards the western coast to look for both vibrancy and relaxation. From endless waters and golden beaches to dense greenery, everything you expect to see on a summer scene is in Taean-gun County.

Escaping the blazing summer heat of the city, we drive to the town of Taean on Korea’s western coast. There lies one of the most stunning beaches in the country. Ocean water has flowed into eroded riverbeds to create the region’s coast, resulting in the numerous islands of various sizes dotting the sea. So, you’ll find a stunning harmony of coastlines and islands in Taean.
Cheollipo Beach
Drive two hours from Seoul to reach Mallipo Beach. Beyond the endless sandy beach stretches the vast Yellow Sea, shimmering white under the bright sun. Walk along the beach, the sand turned hard from the salty water, as you feel the cool waves crashing against your feet. Find a spot on the sand and take a moment to take in the scenery: people floating on rented beach tubes; a group of surfers paddling out to sea; families relaxing under a large parasol. A small harbor catches your eye in the distance as you hear the sound of breaking waves and happy laughter. It is an energetic and yet calm moment on the beach, a perfect summer picture.

If you’re in the mood for a more secluded seaside, Cheollipo Beach, 2 km north of Mallipo Beach is the place to go. Smaller than Mallipo Beach, this compact beach offers a quieter, more intimate side of Korea’s west coast. Dakseom Island in the middle of the ocean particularly adds a mystical charm to the peaceful scenery. The path to the island is hidden at high tide, but is revealed when the water recedes. Covered densely with pine trees, the island is surrounded by majestic cliffs, shaped over time by wind and water. Take a leisurely walk along the sand towards the island. The experience is close to being part of a black and white ink painting.
There is a long piece of land that juts out into the sea between Cheollipo Beach and Mallipo Beach, separating the two beaches. Visitors can stroll along the scenic path—built on leveled decks—that winds around the landscape. Continue along the path and no sooner Cheollipo Beach stretches under your feet with Dakseom Island standing lonely in the sea. Further up the path lies Mallipo Beach with sunbathers enjoying the water. And just like that, the small strip of land offers a different landscape of Taean coast that can all be visited in just a few hours.

더위를 이겨내기 위해 너도나도 떠나는 요즘. 여름을 더욱 완벽하게 즐기고자 한국 서쪽의 태안으로 향한다. 한국에서도 손꼽힐 정도로 아름다운 해변을 갖춘 곳이다. 이곳의 해안은 침식된 하천 사이로 바닷물이 들어차며 만들어졌다. 그 덕분에 태안에서는 바다뿐만 아니라 크고 작은 섬도 볼 수 있고, 뒤돌면 항구와 북적이는 사람들이 만들어내는 정겨운 장면도 만날 수 있다.
서울에서 차로 2시간을 달려 만리포 해수욕장에 도착한다. 하얀 백사장이 끝도 없이 펼쳐진다. 지평선과 맞닿은 바다에 숨이 트인다. 바다가 햇볕을 받아 눈이 시릴 만큼 반짝인다. 하얀 백사장을 밟고 앞으로 나아간다. 바닷물을 머금어 단단해진 모래 위에 서니, 발 앞까지 와서 부서지는 파도가 퍽 시원하다. 백사장에 자리를 잡고 앉아 주변 풍경을 바라본다. 튜브를 빌려 바닷물을 만끽하는 사람, 서핑을 즐기는 무리, 파라솔 밑에서 오손도손 이야기를 나누는 사람들, 멀리 작은 포구가 눈에 들어온다. 부서지는 파도 소리와 행복한 사람들의 목소리가 섞인다. 시끌벅적하면서도 한편으론 여유롭다. 영락없는 여름의 풍경이다.
조용한 바다도 궁금해 만리포 북쪽에 있는 천리포 해수욕장을 찾는다. 만리포에 비해 작다는 의미로 명명된 이 해변은, 아담하니 또 다른 서해의 매력을 느낄 수 있는 곳이다. 특히 바다 한가운데 떠 있는 닭섬은 한적한 풍경에 신비로움을 더한다. 물이 들어차면 닭섬으로 가는 길이 끊기고, 물이 빠지면 또 길이 열리는 곳이란다. 닭섬 위엔 해송들이 빼곡하게 자리한다. 닭섬의 절벽 또한 멋들어지게 깎였다. 닭섬을 앞에 두고 한참을 걷는다. 수묵화 속을 걷는 듯한 기분에 빠진다.
천리포 해수욕장과 만리포 해수욕장 사이에는 바다 쪽으로 툭 튀어나온 듯한 지형이 있다. 이곳을 두고 만리포 해수욕장과 천리포 해수욕장이 갈린다. 그 지형을 빙도는 탐방로로 향한다. 나무로 만들어진 산책로로, 꽤 높은 곳에 설치되어 있다. 걷다 보면 어느새 발 아래로 천리포 해수욕장이 펼쳐진다. 그 위에서 바다 한가운데의 닭섬을 바라본다. 산책로 위를 걷다 보니 만리포 해수욕장의 옆 모습이 나타난다. 바다를 즐기는 사람들이 손톱만큼 작게 보인다. 탐방로를 가운데 두고, 태안은 이다지도 다른 풍경을 선사한다. 짧은 시간 내 여러 군데를 여행한 것만 같은 뿌듯함을 즐긴다.
천리포 위쪽으로는 백리포, 십리포, 일리포라고 불리는 해안도 있다고 한다. 해안의 크기가 점차 작아진다는 의미에서 붙여진 곳이란다. 만리포와 천리포가 색다른 매력을 보여주는 것처럼, 이들도 각각 다른 매력을 품고 있을 것 같아 다음에 꼭 찾아보기로 결심한다.
All that beach fun has left you hungry for a good meal, and thankfully, the area around Mallipo and Cheollipo are lined with restaurants specializing in seafood which Taean is known for. Visit a restaurant by the beach and order gegukji, a local specialty of spicy stew made with crab, kimchi, napa cabbage and radish. The umami flavor of the crab and sweetness from the cabbage are well-balanced for this hot and refreshingly hearty dish that will leave you feeling vitalized. Picking out the crab meat from the shell and enjoying it with various side dishes and a bowl of rice is part of the fun.

After a satisfying meal, visit Cheollipo Arboretum, another popular spot in Taean. It was the life project of Carl Ferris Miller, an American-born naturalized Korean also known by the Korean name Min Byung-gal, who bought land around this area from 1962 and built the arboretum since 1970. As the only botanical garden in Korea located by the sea, Cheollipo Arboretum offers beachgoers a chance to explore both the ocean and garden which sets Taean apart from other coastal destinations.
The garden is a haven for diverse plants that are grouped into 38 different sections all around the garden including hydrangea, needleleaf tree and peony. With 16,895 species, the arboretum cultivates the highest number of plants in Korea creating a breathtaking scenery on every corner. Walk through a field of rhododendron with the vast pond in sight and stop by bushes of hydrangea blossoming in a stunning array of colors for a photo opportunity. Don’t miss the beautiful magnolia, most curious to be in full bloom in the summer, and the Astilbe chinensis garden that looks as if a bunch of artists’ colorful paint brushes has been stuck in the grass. The gentle rustling of flowers and leaves against the wind sound like the waves, a musical note from nature.
Stroll around the arboretum until you stand in front of the sea, Dakseom Island right before your eyes. Fill your lungs with the salty air as the last sun rays stretch over the coast. The garden hosts a special sunset program for visitors every Friday and Saturday evening until October. Another summer highlight is a festival that centers around the theme of mugunghwa, or the rose of Sharon, the national flower of Korea. Visitors are free to roam the grounds individually or join a scheduled tour led by the garden guide who will share stories related to the arboretum and its plants, perhaps presenting a different perspective on the spectacular landscape.

Passing by the coast of Taean on the way back home, the rose-hued sunset sets over the shimmering sea and sandy beaches. It paints a different picture from the one seen during the day. The time spent in this ever-changing landscape was wholeheartedly pleasing and enjoyable. The exotic scenery and energy of Taean are unlike anywhere else, a place that will be remembered as a treasure trove of hidden surprises.
한없이 바다를 즐기다 보니 금방 허기가 진다. 다행히 천리포와 만리포 일대에는 수많은 음식점이 있다. 태안의 자랑인 해산물을 전문으로 하는 곳들이다. 식당을 방문에 태안에서만 즐기는 해산물 요리인 게국지를 주문했다. 게국지는 신선한 게를 매콤한 양념을 풀어 넣은 육수에 넣고, 김치, 배추, 무 등과 함께 끓여내는 음식이다. 게의 감칠맛과 배추의 단맛이 무척이나 잘 어우러진다. 뜨거운 음식이지만, 시원하고 구수하니 먹으면서 기력이 보충되는 것 같다. 이리저리 껍질을 해체해 가며 살을 발라 먹는 재미, 갖가지 반찬과 흰 밥에 곁들여 먹는 재미가 제각각이다.
만족스러운 식사 후 태안의 또 다른 명소 천리포 수목원을 찾는다. 한국에 귀화한 Carl Ferris Miller(한국이름 민병갈)가 1962년 대지를 구매해 1970년부터 조성한 수목원이라 한다. 이곳 덕에 태안 여행이 다른 해안 지역의 여행에 비해 더욱 색다르게 느껴진다. 한국에서 유일하게 바다에 면한 식물원이라 이곳만 방문하면 바다와 숲을 동시에 만날 수 있기 때문이다.
수국원, 침엽수원, 모란원 등 총 38개의 주제로 이뤄진 이곳은, 그야말로 식물들의 천국이다. 16,895개, 국내 최다 식물을 보유한 이곳에는 발걸음을 옮기는 곳마다 영화 같은 장면이 펼쳐진다. 흐드러진 만병초와 드넓은 연못을 바라본다. 가지각색의 수국이 탐스럽게 핀 곳에서는 기념사진을 찍는다. 한여름에 핀 신비로운 목련 꽃도 만나고, 물감 먹은 붓들이 떼로 모인 듯한 노루오줌 정원도 만난다. 바람이 한 번씩 스칠 때마다, 셀 수 없을 만큼의 꽃과 잎사귀들이 부딪히며 소리를 만들어낸다. 언뜻 들으면 바닷소리 같기도 한, 아름다운 곡조다.
천리포 수목원을 빙 둘러 다시 바다를 마주한다. 조금 전 마주했던 닭섬이 바로 앞에 있다. 짠 기가 서린 바닷바람을 한가득 마시며, 조금씩 지는 해를 바라본다. 서해안의 여름 노을을 감상할 수 있는 프로그램이, 이곳 천리포 수목원에서 10월까지 금요일과 토요일마다 진행한다. 또 여름이면 한국의 상징인 무궁화를 주제로 한 축제가 열린다. 개별적으로 방문해 여유로운 시간을 즐기는 것도 좋지만, 전문 해설사가 식물원과 식물에 얽힌 이야기를 들려준다면 이토록 아름다운 풍경을 좀 더 다른 시각으로 바라볼 수 있을지도 모르겠다.
태안의 해안들을 스쳐 가며 집으로 돌아간다. 붉게 물든 석양이 일렁이는 바다와 해변 위에 내려앉았다. 낮에 본 모습과는 사뭇 다르다. 시시각각 다른 모습을 보여주는 태안에서의 시간이 알차고 즐겁다. 태안이 아니라면 만나지 못했을 이국적인 풍경들과 이곳의 에너지가 마음속에 물든다. 태안은 숨겨진 낭만이 있는 곳으로 기억될 테다.
