Asia-PacificA Scholar’s Feast: Old and NewFeb 18, 2019

“A Scholar’s feast: Old and New” exhibition was successfully held, welcoming an audience of 150 at the Korean Cultural Center in Sydney. Gayaguem (zither-like string instrument) ensemble’s performance and artist Hwang In-seong’s pottery simulation during the opening ceremony captivated the audience.

This event was hosted by Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and collaborated by the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange, Cheongju City, Cheongju Craft Biennale, Korean Cultural Center, and Australian Design Centre. Craft works were presented based on Cheongju’s local culture, providing a great opportunity for visitors to learn more about Korean culture.

Events before the opening ceremony included demonstrating straw and plants crafts by Lee Gang-rok, modern ceramics by Kim Man-su, and traditional ceramics by Kim Jang-ui. Korean side dishes and ginseng liquor at the exhibition were also available to taste and offered a comprehensive experience. Consular representatives from each country and artists were impressed, giving two thumbs up for Korean traditional snacks and drinks.

The exhibition featured real books, food models, and videos to effectively introduce Chengju scholar’s food culture that is shown in the book “banchandeungsok” and sinseonju (ginseng liquor). The artists also prepared modern and traditional craft works under the theme of Cheongju food culture. Media stations installed at the exhibition hall allowed visitors to print information about artworks.

“Banchandeungsok” is an important recipe book written in Korean in the 1900s that shows a Cheongju nobleman’s family recipes and ingredients. Cheongju Sinseonju was recognized for its 400 years of history and designated as Chungcheongbuk-do Province’s Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 4. Sinseonju is usually made with the mix of medicinal herbs, sweet rice, and yeast and fermented into rice wine.
